Marvel continued its expansion policy of the 1980s with the introduction of The New Universe and its eight new series, with the star of the lead title, Star Brand, hitting the cover of this month's Marvel Age. This was the month that all core Marvel titles featured a celebratory 25th anniversary frame, drawn by John Romita; Marvel Age took it a little further with the reverse shot on the back cover, which added a few diminutive characters like Obnoxio the Clown, Forbush Man, and Howard the Duck.

The New Universe was Marvel's third large expansion in three years, following the introduction of the Epic Comics line and Star Comics, but the creation of a shared universe outside of Marvel's more familiar universe did not go over well with fans, and the "World Outside Your Window" effectively ended within a couple of years of its launch.

Meanwhile, the Mutant Report focused on the "Mutant Massacre," an early crossover event that was advertised in this issue with this image featuring new by Walter Simonson.

Long before the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, movies featuring Marvel characters were few and far between. So when it was announced that there was going to be a Howard movie, and that George Lucas was involved, well, I was as excited as anyone.

Marvel took advantage of the upcoming movie with a new Howard issue and a movie adaptation, plus this cover to Marvel Age by Kyle Baker, who also illustrated the movie adaptation. I had the opportunity to write the cover article about Howard's comics career and the movie (which Marvel reprinted in the Howard the Duck: The Complete Collection Vol. 4 trade paperback), and Fred Hembeck contributed a comic strip from the mouth of Howard himself.

Meanwhile, the New Talent Department looked at the art of penciller Louis Williams, who would go on to draw several comics for Marvel and DC.

For its second annual, Marvel Age leaned into the company's 25th anniversary, celebrating with a flip book that presented today's Marvel heroes on the front cover as well as a back cover and a handful of flip-book pages that imagined an issue of Marvel Age as it might have appeared in 1963.

Strangely, this 48 page annual had the same $0.50 cover price as a regular 32 page issue of Marvel Age!

Much of this issue spotlights what's to come in the next year or so for Marvel's ongoing titles, as well as new books no one had heard about yet. (The Nam, anyone?) The many pages of logos and text are livened up by some great pages of previews in comics form, including some really fun pieces as well as oddities, like the look at a Daredevil run written by Steve Englehart that never materialized.

This issue also gave readers their first look at the lineup of the New Universe, with exciting... no art? Yes, somehow three solid pages of text was supposed to get fans ready to buy into eight new titles about "the world outside your window." This wouldn't be the last time the New Universe was poorly promoted, unfortunately.

On the 1963 side of the issue, Coming Attractions highlighted annuals for the Fantastic Four, Strange Tales, Millie the Model, and Patsy and Hedy, as well as the latest issues of Kid Colt Outlaw and the Two-Gun Kid. There's also a look back at the Atlas Age in 1954, and a profile of Jack Kirby by Jack Kirby.

Letters column: "Make Mine Marvel!"

Steelgrip Starkey (and his all-purpose power tool!) landed on the cover of Marvel Age #42. Written and created by artist Alan Weiss, with art by Weiss and Jim Sherman, this mostly forgotten Epic miniseries starred a globe-hopping all-around fix-it man who travelled from crisis to crisis.

This issue also featured a Mutant Report article on The Incredible Hulk and Wolverine #1, the first-ever reprinting of Hulk #180 and 181 -- a comic I worked on as assistant editor, as well as coming up with the wraparound cover concept that John Byrne drew.

Stan's Soapbox focused on both the soon to be disliked Howard the Duck movie, as well as Stan's take on "the role of the super-hero in America, yesterday and today," as suggested by editor Jim Salicrup.

The New Talent Department reared its head with a new column that shined a spotlight on artist Jim Sanders III, who here was trying out as an inker, with samples inked over several artists. Interestingly, the column highlights what inking can do for finished artwork in terms of line weight, shadows, and perspective -- aspects that an inker can accentuate whether the penciller has indicated them or not.

And Marvel Age once again kicked off the summer annuals season with a roundup of all the titles getting their own annuals, including debut annuals for Alpha Flight, West Coast Avengers, and X-Factor. This issue includes the polling results from the 1985 annuals, plus a report card for fans to fill out about the 1986 annuals
