At the start of 1989, the Incredible Hulk was on TV, and the Punisher was on his way to the silver screen. Stan Lee had written in his Marvel Age Soapbox column about movies starring Iron Man, the Silver Surfer and more. I'm going out on a limb to say that I don't think anyone would have put money on this month's cover hero, Moon Knight, ever starring in his own TV series one day — and yet, here we are!

John Byrne had returned to Marvel after his epic 1980s Superman makeover — the one that landed him a gig drawing a cover for Time Magazine less than a year earlier.

Byrne was very busy back at Marvel, where he wrote and pencilled She-Hulk and West Coast Avengers as well as writing Avengers every month.

And one of mainstream comics' funnest ideas, Damage Control, was featured in an inventive back cover ad this month as well.

This issue of Marvel Age features two of Marvel's funniest series of the 1980s - Groo the Wanderer and Sensational She-Hulk, with a five-page She-Hulk comics preview and what basically adds up to a wraparound Groo cover.

Fans in the U.S. also got a look at the upcoming Captain Britain trade paperback, which presented stories that were previously available only in England.

After a week off (thanks, covid!), I'm back with one of the weirdest issues of Marvel Age yet. M.A. has included long lists of products and books available from Marvel before, but this time they're all bundled together under the umbrella of "The Marvel Image Catalog," in the style of the Sharper Image.

The 15-page section covers graphic novels, videos, posters, trade paperbacks (collected editions, that is), Marvel Masterworks, and more -- and the editors really covered their bases by sticking disclaimers about every other page that read "Available only at your favorite comics shop. This is not a mail order catalog."

And how odd is it that the first major Marvel movie in the New World era was...The Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren. Not their finest cinematic achievement, but it was something.
