The big price hike arrived at last in Marvel Age #79, with the price increasing from $0.50 to $0.75 -- still far cheaper than a standard comic book at the time. Salicrup's Section explained that they managed to offset the original promised price increase, which would have made Marvel Age cost a whole buck, by adding the Marvel Age Super Shopper Gallery, seen in the back cover.

This would imply that retailers had to pay for the privilege of being listed on the inside back cover.

Plus, cigar smokers united in the new graphic novel Wolverine & Nick Fury: The Scorpio Connection. At this point, Marvel could have paired off Wolverine with, well, Millie the Model, and it probably would have sold. But this epic was by two comics legends: writer Archie Goodwin and artist Howard Chaykin -- which meant fans were in for a treat.

And Marvel followed up its run of Moebius reprints, including tales of Arzach and other science fiction / fantasy fare, with reprints of Lieutenant Blueberry, now credited to Moebius rather than the artist's real name, Jean Giraud.

After a couple of issues that mentioned an upcoming price hike, this is the final issue of Marvel Age with a $0.50 cover price. That price stood for just over three years — but fans who picked up this issue were probably pleased to see in Salicrup's Section that the new price would not be a full dollar, as previously announced, but $0.75 instead! Not only that, but the issue included a subscription coupon with readers' last chance to get on board at the old price.

In 1988, the concepts of manliness and being a wimp were again part of the public discourse, thanks in no small part to George H. W. Bush being called a wimp during his second presidential campaign, a subject tackled by a Newsweek cover story in late 1987.

Of course, Marvel Comics had no shortage of tough guy heroes in 1989 -- not with Wolverine and Nick Fury running around! This issue has articles on them, as well as Indiana Jones and the second volume of A Sailor's Story.

And in Salicrup's Section, readers found a dire warning: Marvel Age would soon go up in price from $.50 to a whole buck!
