Mutant madness kept on rolling as Marvel unveiled the top-secret new series X-Factor in this issue of Marvel Age. The series was introduced in "The Mutant Report," in a series of heavily redacted interviews with editor Mike Carlin, writer/inker Bob Layton, penciller Jackson Guice, another writer Roger Stern, writer penciller John Byrne, and editor in chief Jim Shooter. The launch of X-Factor included story points from Avengers and Fantastic Four, which made it a debut to be remembered.

In honor of X-Factor's debut, Fred Hembeck talked to Cyclops, a man of few words.

Also in this issue, editor Jim Salicrup bids a fond farewell to assistant editor Kurt Busiek, who was moving on to bigger and better endeavors.

This issue's New Talent Department looks at a penciling contest that took place at Comix Fair, where artists Steve Leialoha, John Romita Jr., and Ron Wilson judged entries based on The Official Marvel Comics Try-Out Book...and the winner is...Steve Erwin! Tied for second place were George Turney and Ben Dunn.

And, for anyone wondering why Marvel Age and other titles had been looking so weird lately, there's an article on the new printing process known as flexography that gave us brighter, blotchier colors.

The Marvel Age 1985 Calendar -- September

    Tuesday, July 6, 2021

The popularity of the X-Men and other mutants continued to grow throughout the 1980s, and that reality is reflected in Marvel Age #30 with the debut the feature "The Mutant Report," which focused exclusively on...yes, mutants. This debut column only ran one page, but it would quickly grow to multiple pages, with sub-features like the cartoon "It's Genetic."

"The Mutant Report" appears over the logo on this issue's cover, which features the heroes of the Marvel Universe enjoying a picnic, with Doctor Doom about to ruin the afternoon, and...wait a minute, is that Conan the Barbarian helping himself to a chicken leg? What's he doing here?

This issue's "New Talent Department" once again dives into the tricky business of trying to critique written material. In this case, it's a plot submission from a writer named Dave Hudak, who sent in a Captain America story for which editor Mike Carlin provides some broad strokes input on the story, including, "Captain America is out of character throughout. He does things that Captain America just would not do," and, "Basically, there's no conflict here. Cap does not have to make a choice." I wrote this article myself, with illustrations by artists James W. Fry and Phil Lord.

Another article previews the 1985 slate of annuals, which were all set for summer release. The annuals also showed up on the inside front cover with the 1985 Marvel Age Summer Annuals Report Card, which is a great opportunity to involve readers, and demonstrate that Marvel cares about their opinions. There's also the promise of info on the upcoming Marvel Age Annual

Marvel Age gained 26 new contributors with issue #28 -- consulting editors who worked down the hall and provided story details, behind the scenes art, and other vital information for every issue of what was now touted on the cover as "The Official Marvel News Magazine." There were other publications around that provided fans with inside info on upcoming comics, but none that with mastheads including industry legends like Archie Goodwin or Denny O'Neil.

This issue went on sale April 9, and in keeping with the fun atmosphere at Marvel at the time, it opened with a section called "Not the Marvel Coming Attractions, which mixed fanciful descriptions for regular upcoming issues (Captain America #309 -- "Steve Rogers fails the Famous Artists's art talent test!") with titles that...no, they can't really be planning a Jarvis the Butler miniseries, right? But some are convincing, too, like new miniseries for Ariel, Havok and Polaris, the Sentinels, or Silver Surfer. Like, why not, right?

This section also feature the famous Barry Windsor-Smith Daredevil cover guest-starring Spiny Norman of Monty Python fame.

Also in this issue, I interview editor Mike Carlin and writer Archie Goodwin about Dazzler...an article I have no memory of writing! Plus, the Rawhide Kid returns, Elfquest comes to Marvel for a reprint series (with Cutter scaring Irving Forbush on the cover), and more.

Oh, and fans learned why Spider-Man makes a great urban hero, but isn't as successful in the 'burbs. No tall buildings around to thwipp to!
