Marvel touted it as the wedding of the year, and in comics it certainly was. No one expected Spider-Man -- who, as Peter Parker, originally ducked having to meet Mary Jane Watson as long as he could -- would now marry Mary Jane.

Marvel Age covered the event in all its glory, with articles on Spidey's first marriage to the winsome Wisp in the pages of Not Brand Echh -- placing it outside continuity, of course.

This issue also covered MJ's wedding dress, designed by fashion icon Willi Smith, as well as alternate paper doll dresses designed by John Romita Sr., Vince Colletta, and Janet Jackson.

Stan's Soapbox made way for a new feature this issue with the introduction of Wilie Lumpkin, the comic strip Stan and artist Dan DeCarlo worked on in the late 1950s.

The Silver Surfer soared once more in Marvel Age #52, with three -- count 'em, three! -- separate articles about good old Norris Radd. All written by Bill Slavicsek, the articles look at the Surfer's history, and the new monthly series by writer Steve Englehart and artist Marshall Rogers, and (best of all) an article on a movie that was then in development, which was slated to star Richard Here. The article also mentions a new Silver Surfer graphic novel by the team of writer Stan Lee and artist Keith Pollard, which I believe was never published.

Even Stan himself gets in on excitement in this issue, with a Stan's Soapbox column about the Surfer that retells the story of how Jack Kirby added the Silver Surfer to the Galactus Trilogy in the Fantastic Four.

And let's not leave Fred Hembeck out of the picture!

Things took a turn for the grim and gritty at Marvel in 1987, as the Punisher, longtime nemesis of Spider-Man and Daredevil, graduated into his own monthly series by writer Mike Baron and artist Klaus Janson. This new series followed a five-issue miniseries the year before, and would lead the way to innumerable Punisher projects to follow.

Marvel took note of the rise of comics shops across the country, with a three-page list of stores  that catered to comics fans.

And in his soapbox, Stan Lee gets to break the admittedly old news that Marvel has been bought by New World Pictures.

Plus, not to be outdone by the Muppet Babies, the Flintstone Kids took up residence on Saturday morning TV, accompanied by a Star Comics series.
