It's the Silver Surfer's time to shine on the cover of Marvel Age #71. Good old Norrin Radd was, at this point, 21 issues into his solo series, and was about to soar into a new, very mini miniseries by Stan Lee and Moebius. Two graphic novels were in development as well: Judgment Day, written by Lee and Tom DeFalco with art by John Buscema, and The Enslavers, written by Lee with art by Keith Pollard.

Editor Mark Gruenwald expands his "Mark's Remark's" ramblings, previously seen in the letters columns of books he edited, to a regular column in Marvel Age. And red-hot artist Arthur Adams is interviewed in the Mutant Report.

This is also the point where Marvel UK started introducing new series — in this case, it was Death's Head, written by Simon Furman and pencilled by a 17 year old Bryan Hitch.

Hey, it's Marvel Age #70 — which means we're at the halfway point in the run of good old Marvel Age! And this issue has a really odd cover by John Byrne, who was then the writer/artist on She-Hulk and was about to take over the same chores on West Coast Avengers.

What makes the cover weird? To me, at least, it's the WCA team sort of hanging out at the beach...which doesn't look like a beach. And She-Hulk just happens to be there, where she says "I just came to use the beach," a phrase that makes me say "wha...?"

Inside, Marvel Coming Attractions shows us how quickly the market for collected editions was growing, as Marvel Masterworks get a special break-out treatment.

This issue also introduces a new feature called "Newsreel" — and while that name is pretty well hidden in this debut article, it's framed in a filmstrip layout. And we also get to know Solarman, the Hero Who Could be YouTM

The Mutant Report gives readers a look at the new event, "Inferno," crossing over between not just the X-books but several mainline Marvel titles.

Marvel Age presents a diverse slate of thrills in this issue -- or, as the cover shows us, "Inhumans, Stray Toasters, Count Duckula!" (They didn't even have to mention the comics adaptation of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"!)

Salicrup's Section talks about a student job expo, illustrated with art by Keith Haring.

In a decade when fans couldn't get enough of Wolverine, it was inevitable that there would be unlikely team-ups (hello, Havok!) and unlikely creative teams (hello, Jon J Muth and Kent Williams!) This team would go on to moodier fare that arguably better suited their talents, including Moonshadow and the graphic novel version of The Fountain. (How did Havok get top billing, anyway?)

Behind this lovely cover, Marvel Age sported a new look for the late 1980s, with the long-running horizontal banners replaced by spiffy color-hold boxes like these:

Also in this issue, Elvira made her comics debut with the film adaptation of her movie, which appeared in something called Marvel Spring Special #1 (go figure), and readers got to meet The Last American, an Epic comic that looked a whole lot like Marshal Law.
