After the enormous success of the new costume for Spider-Man, introduced in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, several of Marvel's top heroes got fashion refreshes -- and, as this Marvel Age cover shows, fall 1987 was Captain America's turn for an update. Of course, this Captain America was not Steve Rogers, but John Walker, who calls himself "the Captain."

In Stan's Soapbox this month, Stan discusses Captain America, Spider-Man, and upcoming movie and TV releases from Marvel's parent company, New World.

Blood: A Tale gets an article in this issue. It's an allegorical comic with beautifully painted artwork and a story I never quite understood, as written by J.M. DeMatties and illustrated by Kent Williams.

Mr. DeMatteis also is featured in the article on Captain Justice, a two-issue miniseries based on the TV series Once a Hero, which ran just seven episodes in 1987 and 1988. The comic featured art by Steve Leialoha, and it's interesting to note the differences between this version of cover #1, as seen in Marvel Age, and the final cover, below.

As old Marvel writers were wont to say, "The old order changeth!" This issue of Marvel Age announced that Tom DeFalco had ascended to become Marvel's new editor in chief, stepping into Jim Shooter's role.

Elsewhere in this issue, editor Mark Gruenwald talks about his many projects in an interview that's memorable for this delightful portrait of Mark by Kyle Baker.

And if you like Joes -- G.I. Joes, that is -- well, Marvel's got them. This issue introduced several new Joes, with commentary from G.I. Joe writer Larry Hama. The article featured art from Marvel Animation that sure looks like it was drawn by Russ Heath, who's also this issue's cover artist.

It's a new direction for Iron Man in this issue of Marvel Age, as longtime Iron Man co-writer and artist/inker Bob Layton shows off several new costume designs.

The four-issue Marvel Fanfare tale of the Warriors Three gets an article this issue, with art by Charles Vess. And the New Talent Department looked at the art of Frank Paur, a story director for Marvel Animation's G.I. Joe animated series.

Plus, Stan's Soapbox promises new projects in development in Hollywood starring Iron Man, the X-Men, Dr. Strange, Marada the She-Wolf, Blade the Vampire Hunter, Daredevil, and something called the Death-Cathlon that would be a graphic novel as well as a movie. Well, Stan, quite a few of those came to pass...eventually.

Another year, another Marvel Age Annual -- and another chance to do something really fun and different! In this case, it's all about the Hembecks, as the original Sage of Marvel Age provides not only the wraparound cover but also serves as a sort of late night talk show host. Fred Hembeck welcomes guests from across the Marvel Universe and talks with them about their adventures, providing lots of gags along the way.

The talk show portion of the lead story is interspersed with preview pages by the teams from many of Marvel's biggest series, including pages drawn by future superstar artists like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri, Arthur Adams and more.
