It's Mephisto's turn to Marvel's big bad, as the former foe of the Silver Surfer and Thor was poised to take on just about everybody, including the Fantastic Four, X-Men, X-Factor, and the Avengers. The age of the event miniseries had truly arrived.

Fred Hembeck turned in a memorable, John Buscema-esque page this month to celebrate one of Marvel's biggest villains.

While the core Marvel heroes battled for their very souls, at the other end of the Marvel Universe, the new science fiction series Strikeforce: Morituri was about to launch as well, with stories by Peter Gillis and art by future Astro City illustrator Brent Anderson.

The Star Comics line continued to expand as well, with the new Defenders of the Earth series, scripted by Stan Lee, as well as new titles starring the Inhumanoids and the (ugh) Popples.
