Renée Witterstaeter started this issue by saying that it would be her last, after only a few months on the Marvel Age train. Meanwhile, this issue - as it says on the cover - celebrated 400 issues of Captain America. Not bad for an old guy like him!

Also, there were pictures - lots and lots of pictures - from the 1992 holiday party as well as New York Comic-Con of the same year. Somehow inadequate printing quality never stopped Marvel from running photos on newsprint.

And who knows what anyone was thinking with that back cover?

After four annuals and one other Preview special, this was the final Marvel Age spinoff title in the series' original run, offering fans "a look at 1992's hottest titles," as the cover says. This preview special hit the stands almost two years after the first one, and its page count had grown as well, bumping up from 48 interior pages to 64.

No surprise that the series' groupings had changed quite a bit in the interim as well, with new emphasis on the Punisher, Midnight Sons, and the upcoming 2099 line.

Speaking of which, nearly every title in this special is represented by actual art from the book – except the 2099 titles, which feature drawings by editor Joey Cavalieri!

Spider-Man by Todd McFarlane

Thursday, January 9, 2025

There's a great tradition in comics where artists draw themselves surrounded by their best known characters, but I don't think I've ever seen a better version of it than this fantastic cover by John Romita. Romita is pictured dozing at his desk, surrounded by (clockwise from top left) Crystal, one of the Femizons from Savage Tales #1, Medusa, Black Widow, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, Betty Brant, and Aunt May, plus a poster of the Dragon Lady from Terry and the Pirates on his door and Virginia Romita peeking into the doorway.

The interview with Romita is a treasure trove of rarely seen artwork, including the Spidey Kids cast and the first drawing of Mary Jane. Along with that, there's a new article on the Raiders that reveals art corrections like the Captain America cover seen below.

Meanwhile, Mark's Remarks continues to look at art and story submissions - a tough job that he takes on with grace.

The 1992 Marvel Age Calendar: March
By Mike Lackey and Darren Auck

Thursday, January 2, 2025

Sweet Christmas! Luke Cage returned in this issue of Marvel Age with a new series by writer Marcus McLaurin and artist Dwayne Turner – and finally, the former hero for hire got an updated look minus the blaxploitation era chain-belt.

Even at the start of 1992, comics publishers were still only dipping their toes into collected editions, which is why Marvel was only now getting around to collecting Secret Wars, eight years after its original publication.

Plus we get a look at Marvel's part in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Marvel's new deal with World Championship Wrestling, and a new set of X-Men trading cards!
