Marvel Age #131 was a grab-bag of goodies and surprises, starting with the an interview with legendary artist Joe Kubert and his sons Adam and Andy, who were then rising stars themselves. The sketches and photos from the interview spilled over to this month's letters column, including a wacky Bazooka Joe take-off by Adam.

Also in this issue, the Groo the Wanderer team of artist / plotter / creator Sergio Aragonés and scripter Mark Evanier looked back at 150 Groo adventures (not just at Marvel), with a couple of new illustrations and commentary by Sergio.

And Stan Lee talked about Marvel's legacy and its commitment to more strong female characters. Oh, also – at the time no one knew the end was coming, but for me, this issue marks the countdown to the final issue of Marvel Age in issue #140.

In 1993 Marvel was prepping for the blockbuster project Marvels, as feature in Marvel Age #130. The series went on to be the big breakthrough for writer Kurt Busiek and artist Alex Ross, as well as heralding a new mainstream interest in painted comics and ushering in a raft of titles that reimagined comics history from the point of view of ordinary people.

This issue also looks at the rap-based comic Break the Chain, some new horror comics, and an imaginative episode of "The Bossmen."

The issue also includes an X-Men / Avengers anniversary poster, which drove the cover price up to $1.25 again.

It's Marvel Age #129, and the House of Ideas pits two teams against each other once again in the new X-Men / Avengers crossover that wound its way through several titles for a five-issue epic. This issue also includes a promotional poster focused on this event. The poster would remain an occasional feature for the rest of Marvel Age's run, pushing the cover price of the issue up to $1.25.

Also in this issue, Marvel celebrates Conan's cross-media conquests and introduces Marvel-based Role-Playing Games. And Epic's Heavy Hitters line unveils its second wave of titles, including Sachs & Violens, Lapdog / Grimed, Brats Bizarre, Terrarists, Binary Deep, Dragon Lines: The Way of the Warrior, Warman, and the Heavy Hitters Annual. These titles pull heavily from Marvel UK content as well as the pen of Chuck Dixon – not to mention the Future Imperfect team of writer Peter David and artist George Pérez.

It's a writer's world in Marvel Age #128, with former Marvel editor turned full-time writer Larry Hama taking on both the cult-favorite Mort the Dead Teenager and the monthly Wolverine series, while the late, great Peter David goes Epic with the miniseries Sachs & Violens.

Marvel Age also continues to spotlight licensing deals – and this issue, it's all about Marvel apparel, including shirts, hats, and neckties. But that's not all, because fans could also get the Marvel Kids' Pizza Pack at participating Pizza Hut locations.

Also this issue, readers learned the details on the Fantastic Four movie from Roger Corman's "low-budget movie factory," as the article calls it. The article really emphasizes that despite the breakneck filming schedule and minuscule budget, there's a lot to love about this movie.
