It was a match made in Tromaville, NJ: The Toxic Avenger and Marvel Comics! Toxie would go on to thrill Marvel readers for close to a year – and he's poised to make his comics comeback next month courtesy of Ahoy Comics

Also this month in Marvel Age, readers witnessed the arrival of Nightcat in her one and only comics adventure, which I discussed with co-writer Barry Dutter on my "One-Shot Wonders" podcast here

And future superstar artist Bryan Hitch came out of the gate hot with his work on She-Hulk, as discussed in this issue's interview. Of course, like many British artists, he arrived on the American comics scene with some work for British publishers already on his resume.

If you had any doubts that this was the 1990s, well -- here's Darkhawk, one of the most 1990s characters ever, at least until Image Comics came along!

But just because the 1990s had arrived doesn't mean Marvel was putting the past behind it. Witness the return of Shang Chi in the 80-page special Master of Kung Fu: Bleeding Black, by the late-period classic team of Doug Munch, Dan Day, and David Day.

Plus, Peter David gets the Pro File treatment, while four years into his long run as writer of The Incredible Hulk, the Jade Giant's different personalities merge together in issue #377, signaling the series' latest new direction. Peter would go on to write the Hulk's adventures for almost eight more years and nearly 100 more issues.

Marvel Age's 1990 Christmas gift to its readers was – a new Groo cover by Sergio Aragones! Who could ask for anything more?

Actually it looks like Marvel readers had lots to wish for at this time, because this issue of Marvel Age promised the new graphic novel Elektra Lives Again, written and illustrated by Frank Miller; The Infinity Gauntlet miniseries by Jim Starlin and George Pérez; a complete hardcover reprint of Marvel Comics #1 from 1939; and English-language reprints of the French Lieutenant Blueberry graphic novel series, illustrated by Jean "Moebius" Giraud.

And if you didn't notice - a couple of issues back, Marvel Age quietly dropped the Marvel Comic Attractions section, which left more space for articles and other excitement.

Three great comics artists share the spotlight this issue: industry veteran Russ Heath, represented by the cover art and the article on the X-Men's animated adventures; French comic master Moebius, whose line of graphic novels was coming up soon from Marvel; and newcomer Dale Keown, then about to make his debut on The Incredible Hulk.

On top of that, fans got their first look at the Barbie comic series, and, straight out of the U.K., The Last American. Plus future-superstar Tom Raney shows his stuff in the New Talent Department.
